Sonoma Coast Trip - Northern California & Bay Area
05/08/2000 to 05/09/2000
Since we love the coast we decided to see some of San Francisco and the coast north of there.
Alcatraz has always been on our list so we took the opportunity to boat out to it and see just what it looks like now.
The we headed up the coast along winding coast highway to see the sights.
And since we were in Sonoma County we stopped for a couple of wine tastings.
San Francisco Bay Area and Alcatraz 05/08/2000
Funny how few pictures we have of this trip - the difference between film and digital.
We took the boat out to Alcatraz, did a tour, and then wandered around by ourselves
No explanation necessary.
The harbor was taken over by seals
Lots of plump looking seals
Yes, they do expect handouts
Something about white sails on blue water
Looking back as we pull away from the dock
San Francisco skyline
Our first glimpse of Alcatraz
Remember 1969 and the IAT (Indians of all Tribes) takeover of Alcatraz?
Some of the buildings are falling apart. Very harsh environment out here
Inside one of the cell blocks
Looking at one of the cell block exteriors
Me - no Shawshank group but you get the feeling
Although the it was a prison the flora is just beautiful
Sea Gulls next in droves here. Some areas are cordoned off during nesting season
One of the guard towers
California Coastline, Fort Ross and a Little Wine 05/09/2000
Driving up the coast - well it is just beautiful. So many great rolling hills, crashing waves and beautiful plants hugging the hills.
We did a little stop at Fort Ross - nice that it still has it's Russian history. And then a couple wineries before heading home.
Lots of nice rocks and crashing waves
Succulents - tons of them covering the hillsides
The colors are very vibrant
For some reason I imagined a pirate ship with this rock
The winding road through the hills
More winding roads. Good thing I don't get car sick
Fort Ross - it's between Bodega Bay and Fort Bragg.
It was originally a Russian-American commercial center
It's nice they saved the old architecture
More great rocks and coastline
Hop Kiln Winery - HK wines
The "hop" building was built by Italian stone masons in 1905
Korbel Winery
Lovely walkway with great cedar tree
One of the fields - used by the TV series Combat and they blew up unwanted stumps
