One of the nice things about being retired is you get to just go when the mood hits you, so we just went back up to Jerome. This is a great old mining town that has found new life as an artist community. It has wonderful winding streets climbing up the hills, great shops, and good restaurants. Naturally we went back to The Asylum Restaurant in The Jerome Grand Hotel (originally the hospital).
Jerome from the winding road leading up to it
In the past many buildings were abandoned or slid down the steep hillside
One of the old ruins preserved in the town
This is the Jerome State Historical Park. Originally it was the home of Jimmy Douglas, owner of the Little Daisy Mine
The Old Douglas Mansion is the largest adobe structure in Arizona
One of the old ore trains now on display outside the museum
A rather stunning exhibit of azurite & malachite. These often indicated areas of copper ore
Originally this was the hospital but now lives on as The Jerome Grand Hotel
This was The Little Daisy Hotel, built by Mr. Douglas as a dorm for the miners. After years of being abandoned it was purchased and restored as a private residence
This interesting building was originally the Powderbox Church. It was built of wood from dynamite boxes, hence the name. Today it is a private residence
Looking up a street to Cleopatra Hill
Just one of the many artsy side streets in town
