Kendrick Trail & Red Mountain
08/22/2005 to 08/22/2006
Once again we decided to escape the heat and headed north. A bit west of Flagstaff are two great areas to get away and relax. One is Kendrick Watchable Wildlife Trail and the other is Red Mountain
Red Mountain is another one of those great places we have hidden around Arizona. This area was once volcanic, so you can see the black ash all around. Makes the red and green that much more stunning

Although we did not see any "watchable wildlife" (except a coyote) we enjoyed the stroll through cool pines and aspens. Also added to our mushroom picture collection!
Once again we get to go off pavement onto dirt
We're not lost. Arlene is looking at birds
The area has been farmed or ranched in the past, and naturally people leave debris
Lots of beautiful aspens
Note the pretty purple flowers still blooming here
Another one of those alien looking orbs
More aspens and a meadow
That's Arlene & I wandering among the aspens
This was the meadow we saw the coyote walking through
The dump from roundups
OK here's the deal. Believe it or not mature pines smell like vanilla or strawberries. Try it.

Red Mountain is such a pretty area. The hike in is not hard and the views are incredible. George had a great time crawling up on the rocks and taking pictures of us way down below. You can see the the various colors in the layers of rock and the beautiful pattern from wind and water.
That's where we are headed, the base of that mountain
You can see all the cinder from volcanic activity. Very much like when we went to Sunset Crater
Just some great craggy rocks
The green is so bright against the black cinders
Our destination.
George was crawling all over these rocks taking pictures
One of the many openings in the rock
George had climbed up fairly high when he took this shot
George was really up there for this shot. I've enlarged it so you can actually see us
On our way out this bird kept talking to Arlene. They communicated very well
