Old Friends Tour - Spring 2019
03/21/2019 to 04/11/2019
A fact of life; We are not getting any younger and neither are a lot of our friends.
We realized there were some folks we had not visited in several years so we headed East.
May sound a little morbid but you just never really know what is ahead so it is always best to be sure to see the ones you love every chance you can.
We drove about 7,000 miles but managed to see just about everyone and had a really good time doing it.
Devil's Den State Park - Arkansas 03/21/2019
So, driving through Arkansas.Believe it or not we have very few pictures of anything in Arkansas. I know, earth-shaking.
Well, a bit north of Fort Smith off I-49 is a beautiful CCC park called Devil's Den. It has deep crevices and fissures which hid the bandits who would rob the Butterfield Stage line.
We did not do many of the trails but did have a nice walk around the area to get a nice feel for it should we be back this way.
Nice little bridge and a small waterfall.
Lots and lots of artistic cairns. Folks have really gotten into doing this
As you can see there are quite a few
Another little waterfall
It's really hard to tell but there is a very deep ad long crevice here. One of many.
Another well hidden crevice. You can see why these were great hide-outs
The multi layered formations were just nice to look at
We thought this one had a profile
Terra Studios - Fayetteville AK 03/21/2019
Well after the Devil's Den we wandered over to Terra Studios. You know all those little glass blue birds you see for sale in Hallmark Stores and gift shops? Well this is where they are hatched.
It's a rather large community of artists who have a love of whimsy and fun - evident from the pics.
The Muse Gallery - or gift shop - also has a cute cafe.
There is a large chess set on one side of the yard, a maze, and a sculpture garden that covers probably an acre or more. And yes, it is full of interesting, sweet, fun art pieces.
We went expecting a little but were quite happy to find so much to see.
Entrance to the Gift Shop & Cafe
As you can see the cafe is full of whimsey.
Like this family having a snack
Kids love it
One of the glass blowers. He's making the signature Blue Bird of Happiness
And yes, he is quite prolific.
Outside there are just tons of fun pieces
Yes, gnomes ride turtles
And they also drive on the gnome way
We thought this quite interesting - quite the bird house
All those blue blobs are glass blue birds
Very well attached I may add
Even the trash cans are fun

Trolls are big. This is George, Myrtle and their son Hubert.
Wildflowers - The Pocket on Pigeon Mountain 03/24/2019 to 03/26/2019
I'm sure you noticed that the Old Friends Tour has so far been devoid of "friends" but I swear we did see people.
Our first stop was to visit my older sister in Northwest Georgia. Since the weather was finally clear we did a little stroll in a lovely place known as The Pocket on Pigeon Mountain.
Even though it was early in the spring and the rains had only abated for a week, we thought the flowers were lovely.
So, a short botanical tour for your enjoyment.
Pocket Trail Head Sign
This was hand made by the ranger to replace the metal plaque that was stolen. Geesh. People suck somtimes
Virginia Bluebells
Virginia Bluebell with a very active butterfly
Celadine Poppy No I did not know it's name I had to ask my sister Diane. She knows everything
I know these. They're a daisy type flower.
Red Buds. Whole trees full of these and yes, they are called red buds.
George loved the spores growing from the moss
Pretty succulents
A Trailing Trillium.
This is a Trout Lily.
Walking up to the top you pass the head of the waterfall. Normally you can get to it below but too many trees have fallen from all the rain
This is what is left of the barn that belonged to the family that once lived up here.
The Cousineau Sisters
Solomons - Maryland 03/27/2019 to 03/28/2019
So after leaving Georgia we headed north to Maryland to see baby sister Jeannie.
Trouble with having a lot of food and fun is you kinda forget to take pictures.
So even though there may not be a lot of photos the time spent with Jeannie was a hoot, as usual.
Jeannie & Sharon
Huckleberry - Jeannie's newest puppy. He is so funny
Looking out at the water as we ate incredible seafood at Stoneys Clark's Landing
Just a pier shot. The weather was bit brisk
This Osprey pair always return to this next in the water by Stoneys here.
They were busy building up their nest
If you look very closely you can see this one is carrying a stick to add to the nest
Chimney Rock & Carolina Fun 03/31/2019 to 04/01/2019
Next stop was to see our friends in South Carolina.
Paula & Bruce have graced us with their company for many adventures, especially ski trips.
Sadly it seems our skiing days are in the past but we still have a good time touring the area where they live.
As usual Bruce was the tour guide and I swear he knows every back road in that part of South & North Carolina.
Paula & Bruce with Sharon. I'm grayer but P & B look the same as 2004, 2006, 2008....You can check for yourself.

Everglades Air-Boat Ride 04/06/2019
Next stop on the friends tour was Ft. Lauderdale to catch up with Gustavo and Jim.
We started thinking about something fun to do, and Jim said he had always wanted to do an air boat ride.
Now, we, as old Floridians ourselves, had done air boat riding with the kids a long time ago but that was mostly along the St. Johns so it was research time.
We knew we did not want to do one of those large “30-people-on-one-boat-out-and-back-in-30-minute-deals†- so after much searching George found Flo Adventures.
The guys at Flo Adventures - Antonio and Manny - give personalized tours and really concentrate on the ecology of the glades and are well schooled in the flora and fauna. And they were really nice.
I don't think we could have found a better crew to take us around and we all really enjoyed it.
Our ride
Pretty nice. That's Antonia on the dock and Manny on the boat.
And we are off. Lots of sawgrass
Stopped at a small island - actually a small peninsula made by a dredging project decades ago.
Looking back at the boat
Back on the water we saw all this white. Antonio told us the name of the plant but I forgot
It grows underwater but when exposed to the sun the top dies
That's the plant as it looks under the water.
We loved the water lily
Jim - Gustavo and I traded to let he and George ride up front
Antonio and me. We were discussing a night ride
Sharon, Gustavo and JIm
More lily pads
And another pretty flower
At the end of the ride - as you can see a bit wind blown but very happy
Air Force Armament Museum - Eglin, Florida 04/08/2019
We saw this on the map so we decided to drop down toward the coast and check it out.
By now you know we love museums of all sorts. We also love planes and history. So how could we lose?
I highly recommend a stop here if you're ever in the area. The number of flying things they have is outstanding.
Buckle up because there are a lot of planes and we took pictures of almost all.

Fort Morgan - Mobile Bay 04/09/2019
Ah, more history.
Since we are in the area we thought we should spend more time on the coast, and naturally we have to do forts.
Fort Morgan - actually there is a town called Fort Morgan so don't get confused - was called Fort Bowyer when built in 1812.
It was renamed in 1833.
It has had multiple upgrades and rebuilds over the years but it's main purpose - to guard the coast and Mobile - has never changed.
It was bombarded into surrender by the Northern forces in 1864.
It last saw active used in 1944. So, lots of history.
Originally it was built of brick and mortor.
There is quite a bit of seepage. Even forming little stalagtites
One of several batteries. As you can see later construction was concrete
Former gun mount.
A little beauty in a former gun mount
The stairs were NOT OSHA compliant. I can't imagine carrying heavy equipment up these. The rise was up to my knees, and I have long legs.
More beauty. Just liked the colors
The complex has buildings outside the fort. This old one is crumbling

Mobile Bay Ferry 04/09/2019
Our next stop was across Mobile Bay, so rather than drive up and over we just went across on the ferry.
We haven't done ferries in years and years, and even more years so it was a little experience for us.
The water was pretty choppy and the wind was really blowing but the ferry ride was pretty smooth.
And a heron of some sort
That's our ferry coming into dock
Cars lined up
The brochure encourages you to get out and wander the deck - but you better be skinny and lithe
Which, thankfully we are so we did wander the deck and enjoy the view
The crew control tower.
These guys rode the tail ramp all the way across the bay
Fort Gaines - Dauphin Island Alabama 04/09/2019
Across the mouth of the bay is Dauphin Island. Since it flanks the entrance to Mobile Bay it was the natural site for a fort.
The ferry docks right near it so you drive off the boat and into the fort parking lot.
So, Damn The Torpedoes! Full Speed Ahead.
Yes, this is where Admiral David Farragut ran the Confederate blockade and won the battle for Mobile.
This is a bit smaller than the sprawling Fort Morgan complex but it is very well done. We really enjoyed this tour.
Our destination - Fort Gaines
Front of the fort
Yes, it is a mote of sorts. More like a ditch I guess
Going through the tunnel into the fort
Quite a fancy latrine. The tide washed out the contents twice a day.
Fort Griffin State Historic Site - Texas 04/11/2019
Heading west and through the continent of Texas. Yes, I know it's a state. If you have ever driven across it, you will agree with me; continent.
More forts. YEAH!
Fort Griffin was built after the Civil War to help protect settlers moving in and moving west. It seems to have been a rather complete fort, not stockade type but rather having all the necessities required.
True, it was not plush, but not much was then
Pretty flat grasslands
The mess hall
Not too bad, but lots of cracks in the walls so a bit beezy I'm sure
Some buildings were stone
Most were wood. They have reconstructed some of the quarters
I'm in more or less for scale.
Usually the flag was on a mast. The mast configuration was sturdy enough to withstand all the wind
Kitchen
Ammunition house
This is one of two herds that are housed here
The saloon. Wyatt Earp and Doc Holiday met here.
The jail
The town of Fort Griffin. It went by several names and was really a rough and tumble lawless place

Fort Phantom Hill - Texas 04/11/2019
A little bit down the road is Fort Phantom Hill. It was established before Fort Griffin but for the same reason; settlers moving into the territory and the Natives opposing the loss of their homeland.
Today it is a nice, quiet grassy area with some reconstructed buildings and a nice way to spend an hour.
No Longhorns however.
